ABSTRACT

Disodium 4,4´-bis-(1,3,5-triazinylamino)stilbene-2,2´-disulfonate derivatives were synthesized by reacting 4,4´- diaminostilbene-2,2´-disulfonic acid with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine. The resulting dichloro-sym-triazinyl intermediate was further condensed in two steps with amines by nucleophilic substitutions reaction on their triazine moiety to furnish the fluorescent brighteners. The structures of these compounds were characterized by using spectroscopic techniques i.e., 1H-NMR, FT-IR, UV and elemental analysis. These compounds were used as whitening agents of 100% cotton fiber and their performance was evaluated by light fastness, chlorinated water fastness, washing fastness and CIE whiteness measurements.
